Weather Reporting

The world of the internet has provided a lot of people to go from closet weather freaks to pseudo-meteorologists. It is particularly good for monitoring micro-climates a it often doesn't take a lot to have differences between close locations.

Weather Station

The weather stations that I use include an Acurite 5-in-1 Weather station reporting to an Acurite Access and and Acurite PC Interface. As well, an older Davis Weather Monitor II remains in service and has not be decommissioned yet. These systems provide support for:

  • Outdoor temperature
  • Rain accumulation
  • Wind speed/direction
  • Barometric Pressure
  • Humidity
  • PC data interface
  • Direct and PC-based data deliver to Accurite

This system is adequate for personal weather reporting, and the latest software offers the ability to publish weather to the web.

How does the weather get from me to you?

In the past I had a complicated system to translate Davis weather into APRS compatible weather reports that were transmitted over the air and internet, but with stations defined at Weather Underground, this proved unnecessary and now reports go directly to WU.

The Acurite Access is setup to deliver data to the Acurite website directly using local WiFi and a normal internet connection.

The PC interface part of the system receives the results and puts them onto a local display. The PC software then connects to Acurite as well.

Should one fail, such as when batteries or other issues contribute, then the other is capable of picking up the load.

Weather Underground is supplied either from the PC software directly, or gets its data via Acurite. Two routes never hurt, and on WU under detail charting you can see the result with charts bouncing up and down a small amount through the day. This is due to minor differences in timing and reporting, but it gives a pretty fair representation. To find the detail charts, just use the link below, and click on the station name at the top where it says "TSAWWASSEN (IBCDELTA4) STATION".

Other Weather Sites

There are many other weather sites available. The most useful that I've found are these. They are pointed at weather local to Vancouver Canada area near the US border, but are easily pointed to locations wherever you live.

Weather watching can be very interesting. If nothing else, it helps us know when it's nice outside.
